The Winter season in Colorado is a time for fun outdoor activities! At this time it’s important to remind your patients that Summer isn’t the only time you need sunscreen.
Did you know?
- Snow reflects up to 85% of UV radiation – the effect is similar to the beach!
- The intensity of UV increases by 8-10% for every 1,000-foot increase in altitude.
- For example, the intensity of UV exposure at 12,000 feet (the peak height of most local ski resorts is double that at sea level.
- Eyes are particularly sensitive to this increase in UV exposure-corneal sunburns (“snow blindness”) can lead to cataract formation and retina problems later in life.
